Chapter 4.

Copying The Home Page Document

This was briefly discussed in chapter 2. Before you start blazing through copying and saving, take some time to read this.

Let me familiarize you with one of the functions of those words above 'document title'. This applies to the DECstations only. Before you copy the document, make sure that you have a public_html directory. This is where the sample document will be copied to.

First read the warning at the bottom of this page. Then click HERE. Next, click on file at the top of the mosaic window on the DECstations. You will notice the words File Options Navigate Annotate on top of the window. When you are ready to copy the sample document, click on file, and use the pull down menu to get the Save As: line. Click on your public_html directory as the target directory. Point the mouse in the text box right under Name for Saved Document:. Give the document a name, (don't delete the text that is already in this text box!), like mike.html and click on OK at the bottom of the Save As: window.

After doing this, make sure to set your permissions so that you are allowed to edit the document. In the following chapters, I will be using the emacs editor on the UNIX computers. Spefically the DECstations in the Math Department.

Don't be afraid to explore on the Web. You never know what you might find. Maybe you'll find something like........ THIS.
