• A defense of the Spanish language in the U.S.

UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:
• "Recognizing the cultural importance of the many languages spoken in the United States... (House Concurrent Resolution 6) - commends efforts to maintain English as the common language and also encourages citizens to maintain fluency in their native language (if other than English.)

• English Plus Resolution (House Concurrent Resolution 83) - recognizes the importance of multilinguism.

• Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States establishing English as the official language of the United States (House Joint Resolution 109)

• National Language Act of 1995 (H.R. 123) - makes English the official language and creates a personal right of action for enforcement of the Act.

• Language of Government Act of 1995 (H.R. 345) - makes English the official language and amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide that public ceremonies for the admission of new citizens shall be conducted solely in English.

• Declaration of Official Language Act of 1995 (H.R. 739) - makes English the official language and repeals Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (bilingual education) and &# 167; 203 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (bilingual ballot.)

• National Language Act of 1995 (H.R. 1005) - makes English the official language of the U.S. government and in so doing, the Bilingual Education Act would be repealed (ending bilingual education programs and funds) and the bilingual voting requirements (found in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as amended) would also be terminated.

  UNITED STATES SENATE

• Language of Government Act of 1995 (S. 175) - makes English the official language, places an "affirmative obligation" on the government to preserve and enhance the role of English as the official lan guage, including the obligation to "encourag[e] greater opportunities for individuals to learn the English language." In addition, this bill provides that "any monetary savings derived from the enactment of this Act should be used for the teaching of non- English speaking immigrants the English language." There is also a personal right to sue created.

• Language of Government Act of 1995 (S. 356) - similar to S. 175 (both introduced by Senator Shelby) except that the provision directing the use of monetary savings for teaching English to non-English speaking immigrants is eliminated.

  PENNSYLVANIA:

• The Pennsylvania Language of Governments Act - would make English the official language of Pennsylvania. It creates a personal right of action giving individuals the right to sue to have the act enforced.

• Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1995 (S.318) - makes preferential treatment an unlawful employment practice.

• Act to End Unfair Preferential Treatment (S. 497)

• Equal Opportunity Act of 1995 (S. 1085) - prohibits discrimination and preferential treatment in employment.

  UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

• Act to End Unfair Preferential Treatment (H.R. 1764)

• Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1995 (H.R. 2128) - prohibits discrimination and preferential treatment in employment.

  PENNSYLVANIA

• An Act Prohibiting Discrimination or Preferential Treatment... (H.B. 360) - seeks to end affirmative action in all government agencies of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
