Archimedes and the "Mechanics" of Calculus

By Heather Partner, Rene Rougeux, Robert Valeria
IUP Mathematics Students

In this talk we will discuss how Archimedes used his results from mechanics (e.g. the law of the lever) and geometry to answer questions that are now most often solved using  integration and differentiation.  We will look at results from the works "Equilibrium of Planes," "Quadrature of the Parabola," and "The Method."

Some knowledge of Calculus is necessary for this talk
