Biostatistics: The Quantitative Component of Biomedical and Public Health Research

Biostatistics encompasses the design, analysis and interpretation of data in the biomedical and public health area. This includes identification of occupational and environmental risk, development of techniques for diagnosis, evaluation of new treatments for disease and methods of prevention.

In this presentation we will discuss the statistical aspects of identifying carcinogenesis in the occupational environment, EPA's rationale for declaring second hand smoke a carcinogen, use of clinical trials for evaluating new therapies, evaluation of techniques in diagnostic radiology, development of methods to prevent cancer, and the investigation of genetics as a risk factor for disease.

Emphasis will be given to the statistical issues associated with these health problems and the specific analytic techniques that have been developed to address them.
