Mathematics and its use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The growth of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its diversity in scientific endeavors has allowed it to move beyond the realm of those disciplines that use it as a tool. Mathematics is one of those disciplines beyond that realm which is contributing this growth in diversity. GIS is an extension of statistics in which it has contributed to the growth of a form of statistics known as spatial statistics. Just as important, GIS employs mathematics on several levels that have allowed it to excel to very comprehensive levels as an analytical tool. Today there are many companies that hire people that have a grounding in mathematics and statistics for a GIS position. In addition, there is a larger demand by those developing GIS software and applications that require a strong knowledge of mathematics in order to develop products that the GIS user community needs. Our world relies on mathematics in order to advance and GIS follows suite to this premise. As GIS grows and integrates itself more and more into those other dsiciplines there will be a demand for it to do more complex tasks which will resquire more mathematical and statistical abilities by not only the developers but particular users as well.
