Edel Reilly receives an IUP Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award
At the 14th Annual IUP School of Graduate Studies and Research Awards Luncheon, held on April 16, Dr. Edel Reilly received an Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award! The award recognizes the outstanding contribution of Dr. Reilly's dissertation research. Her dissertation is titled Writing to Learn Mathematics: A Mixed Method Study. Congratulations, Edel!

Jason Carney Recognized at Joint Mathematics Meetings
Applied Mathematics and Computer Science dual major Jason Carney presented a poster titled "Sierpinski Curve Julia Sets from 3-Circle Inversion" at the Undergraduate Mathematics Poster Session held in January at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego. Jason's poster was one of 20 out of approximately 200 that were recognized for outstanding achievement.

Applied Mathematics and Chess
An article by Applied Mathematics graduate student Dan Ross, "Arpad Elo and the Elo Rating System," was published on ChessBase.com. The article is based on work he completed in MATH 563 Mathematical Statistics I.

MATH 115 Information
Beginning Fall 2008, MATH 115 Applied Mathematics for Business will become a three credit course. It will be offered as a four credit course for the final time during Summer 2008.

Calculus Information
MATH 125, 126, 225 (9 credits) will be the new calculus sequence for math and science majors replacing MATH 123 and 124 (8 credits). This change takes effect in Fall 2007 for incoming freshmen. MATH 123 will be offered for the final time in Spring 2008. MATH 124 will be offered for the final time in Fall 2008. If you have questions contact your adviser or the Mathematics Department.

Janet Walker Receives Advising Award
Dr. Janet Walker of the Mathematics Department has been recognized by the IUP Center for Teaching Excellence with a Teaching Excellence Award for Advising. The complete story can be found on the IUP News site.

New Applied Statistics Minor Adviser
Dr. Tom Short is now the adviser for the Applied Statistics minor. Students who wish to add this minor should see Dr. Short in Stright 236.
