Once again summer has flown by and we find ourselves back for another fun and challenging fall semester here at IUP. Lucky for us along with the changing of the leaves, college football season and cooler temperatures are a lot of exciting happenings here in IUP'S Math Department. And as usual, MATHINK is here to fill you in on what is going on. For any new readers, MATHINK is NOT junk email, MATHINK is however the IUP Math Department's electronic newsletter whose purpose is to provide information about what is going on in our department and around campus. One good way to get information on graduate schools is to register with the GRE Search Service. This free service can be utilized by registering for the GRE or simply calling (609) 406-5149. Also to learn more about GRE, visit the GRE web site at: http://www.gre.org. NEWS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS: Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) Update: Q: What is the GSA?? A: The GSA is a university wide graduate students' organization composed of representatives from each graduate department which serves graduates students through voting representation on various committees throughout the university including the University Senate. Q: Who is the representative from the Mathematics department? A: Lisa Ceraso Q: How can my voice be heard at the Assembly? A: You can either contact your representative or attend any of the meetings yourself. A: Fall and Spring Socials at Kangaroos, Internet workshops for graduate students, designing of booths for the Indiana Free Library, and representation on many university committees. Q: What happened at the last GSA meeting? A: Election of officers, committee assignments, and an inquiry about parking permits for graduate students who are required to work on campus before two o'clock. Copies of the applications are available in 308 Stright or at the graduate school office (1st floor Stright Hall). ************************************************************** EXCITING OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS!!! The College Connections for Kids (CCK) and College Connections for Teens (CCT) programs offer IUP graduate students an opportunity to share their special interests with children in the local community. Saturday morning CCK and CCT mini-courses will be presented on campus, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, on Jan. 25, and Feb. 1, 8, 15, and 22, 1997. Each mini-course will include five two-hour sessions, consisting primarily of hands-on learning activities. Proposals should be appropriate for children in one of the following age groups: grades 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9. Course descriptions should inspire curiosity and the learning activities should encourage creativity. CCK and CCT teachers will be paid $20.00 per hour. If you are interested in proposing a course, applications are available in 308 Stright or from the School of Continuing Education, Whitmyre Hall.
