2005 High School Math Competition
Indiana University of Pennsylvania held its Forty-second Annual Mathematics Competition for high school students on April 19, 2005. The competition is sponsored by the Mathematics Department at IUP.
Awards are given to the top six individual winners as well as the top student in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. Trophies in Division I (larger enrollment) and Division II (smaller enrollment) are also awarded to the top three teams in each division. A team score is the sum of the top three individual scores from a school.
The schools competing this year were Bishop McCort, Blairsville, Brookville, Burrell, Deer Lakes, Hollidaysburg Area, Homer Center, Indiana Area, Kiski Area, Marion Center, Punxsutawney Area, Seneca Valley, State College Area, and United. One hundred and nine students participated.
The winners in Division II were Homer Center (Brian Bertig, David Carley, Matt Yurky), first place, Bishop McCort (Caitlin Basile, Matthew Czarnek, Vincent Fiorica ), second place, and Burrell (Nate McClung, Stephanie Sharick, Eddie Sharick), third place. The winners in Division I were State College Area (Barry Liu, Jason Ma, Angela Yen), first place, Indiana Area (Matt Barnes, Garret Flowers, Alex Kruckman ), second place, and Hollidaysburg Area (Kevin Patel, Sahil Verma, Vishash Verma), third place.
The winners in each grade were Michael Phillips (State College Area) in grade 9, Vishash Verma (Hollidaysburg Area) in grade 10, Angela Yen (State College Area) in grade 11, and Garret Flowers (Indiana Area) in grade 12.
The top scorers in the competition were Vishash Verma (Hollidaysburg Area), first place; Angela Yen (State College Area), second place; Jason Ma (State College Area), third place; Barry Liu (State College Area), fourth place; Alex Kruckman (Indiana Area), fifth place; and Garret Flowers (Indiana Area), sixth place.
